The History of Futura and the Bauhaus
In my Typography II course, I undertook a semester-long project that involved creating a book with two running narratives. The course emphasized the use of typographic grids in visual communication, and I incorporated principles of hierarchy and legibility throughout the project. I also explored the evolution of typefaces and their classification as a rational system, which deepened my understanding of typography as a fundamental element of graphic design.
As part of the assignment, I researched the history of a typeface of my choice and a related topic. I selected Futura as the focal typeface and paired it with the Bauhaus movement for my book. The Futura narrative was presented on a separate grid system from the Bauhaus narrative, with the Futura text set in Futura Bold and the Bauhaus text set in Palatino Regular. Throughout the book, I used typography as a form, experimenting with visual principles to influence the organization and structure of the content. For the purpose of this project all text was written by various sources.
